Medieval Castles
Medieval Castles are the most iconic remnant of the middle ages. They were large buildings built to protect itself and those inside, mostly against invading armies. They also acted as courts and in the later stages of the middle ages they were often used as lavish palaces for wealthy kings and Lords/Barons. These castles were used to regulate and control surrounding villages and were built for practicality which is why many English castles look grey and downtrodden. |
Castle Designs
Castles all differed in size and design but they always had a main idea, to protect all inside. This meant that the castle itself contained many defence mechanisms that could be deployed in the time of an attack. These ranged from moates to delay enemy advances to boiling oil poured down on intruding attackers. The castles had tall towers of thick stone used to survey the outlying fields for threats and had large lavish feast halls used for entertaining important guests and officials. |
